Backsplash Cosmetics and Waterproofing

The grout between the backsplash and countertop had failed, leaving a gap that shed pieces of grout during cleaning and exposed the wall behind it. This is not only unsightly and difficult to clean, it also exposes the underlying wall to moisture which can cause significant damage. The old grout and caulk were fully removed, and the surface was carefully scraped and cleaned before applying a fresh bead of color-matched silicone caulk. It is important that a high quality waterproof caulk be used in this application. Joints between dissimilar materials and joints involving a change of plane must always use a flexible material. We left the homeowner with a sealed, finished edge that blends cleanly with the surrounding tile. The repair is not only cosmetic.
